64 Corvette project exposed headlights?
I recently built a few Corvette's and I decided to build a 64 from an AMT 63 Corvette Roadster kit. I thought it would be interesting to build it with the headlights exposed. As fate would have it I ended up with another kit for parts so If I screwed up I had a spare body. Here it is in the final stages of mock up. What do you think?

Bentley to diversify Continental line-up

It?s kind of amazing how Bentley has managed to stay on top of its game despite having only one model to work with: the Continental. Sure, the Mulsanne has come and arrived, but for the longest time Bentley was a one-model company. That is if you don?t include the number of alliterations the Continental has come in.
According to Autocar, now that the 2011 Continental GT is here, the boys at Bentley have bigger plans for the new model.
To diversify the new Continetal model, Bentley is looking into following in the blue print Porsche has constructed with the 911. That means different variants of the model offered in different derivatives, including special editions.
For their part, Bentley is looking at keeping interest in the brand and keeping drastic sales fluctuations at a minimum, thus the intention of spreading the brand?s volume more evenly than in the past. ?We?ve learned that we need to smooth fluctuations,? said Bentley marketing chief Aladair Stewart.
The move is expected to bolster sales of the brand and keep its line-up fresh. There?s something to be said about the formula Porsche uses with the 911. Now, Bentley is looking to follow suit with the new Continental.

Your classic grand prix - race 16
The 1993 Japanese Grand Prix is the selected race in the latest edition of our classic Formula 1 series.
Last week, we asked readers to tell us which of three great races they would most like to see - the 1990, 1993 and 1995 Japanese Grands Prix - and the overwhelming choice was Ayrton Senna's victory in 1993.
The full 'Grand Prix' highlights programme broadcast on the BBC at the time is embedded below, with the shorter highlights of it and the other races linked underneath. There are also short and long highlights of Sebastian Vettel's victory in an incident-packed Suzuka race last year, too.
In order to see this content you need to have both Javascript enabled and Flash installed. Visit BBC Webwise for full instructions. If you're reading via RSS, you'll need to visit the blog to access this content.

Because of the Commonwealth Games, the classic races will not be shown on the red button, either on digital and satellite or on Freeview.
I have to say that I was surprised by just how popular the 1993 race was - it outdid the other two choices by something like five to one.
The 1993 race witnessed a great drive by Senna, and was full of action and intrigue both during the race and afterwards, but I have to say I thought the famous crash between Senna and Alain Prost at the start in 1990 would be the most popular choice.
There was all the drama of the start, Nigel Mansell putting paid to his chances by breaking his Ferrari's driveshaft with an over-exuberant getaway from a tyre stop, and the unusual podium of two Benettons and local hero Aguri Suzuki.
The 1995 race also made a strong case for itself - a superb drive from Michael Schumacher, comedy retirements from Williams drivers Damon Hill and David Coulthard (although it's fair to say the team's no-nonsense technical director Patrick Head wasn't laughing) and a battling drive from Ferrari's Jean Alesi before his retirement (also with a driveshaft failure).
Having said that, it is hard to argue against 1993. It was one of Senna's great wet-weather victories after a race-long battle with arch-rival Prost and there was the sub-plot of Eddie Irvine's electrifying grand prix debut.
Drafted in by Jordan for the last two races of the year, the Northern Irishman qualified an excellent eighth, and used his knowledge of Suzuka gleaned from three years in Japanese Formula 3000 to pass Schumacher and Hill at the start.
Later in the race, while battling with Hill, Irvine had the temerity to unlap himself from Senna. And when the great Brazilian, a little the worse for wear, confronted Irvine about it after the race, he did not find the novice as apologetic as expected - the two got into a heated argument which ended with Senna punching Irvine.
A number of you asked on my last blog whether there was film of this argument. There isn't. But the journalist Adam Cooper was in the room with Irvine at the time, and he recorded the whole thing. A transcript of the row was published in Autosport magazine - for which both Cooper and I were working at the time - and you can read it here.
There were also questions about why we had not chosen the 1996 race, when Hill clinched the world title.
The answer is in the name of this series - classic grands prix. Hill is a popular man, and with good reason, but in no way could that race be called an all-time classic in comparison with others we have chosen.
To recap, the title battle had distilled by the time of Japanwhich was the last race of the season, into a fight between Williams team-mates Hill and Jacques Villeneuve.
Hill led by nine points going into the race - which meant the only way Villeneuve could be champion was if he won and the Englishman was out of the points.
Villeneuve increased the tension by qualifying on pole, ahead of Hill, but his chances were effectively ruined within seconds of the green light, when the Canadian made a poor start and dropped to sixth, behind Hill, Benetton's Gerhard Berger, Mika Hakkinen's McLaren, Schumacher's Ferrari and Irvine's Ferrari.
Villeneuve managed to get past Irvine, but was still in only fifth place when he retired when a rear wheel came off going into Turn One with 15 laps to go. Hill, meanwhile, led untroubled from the start, going only as fast as he needed to, keen to conserve his car.
A popular result, yes, especially in Britain. But a classic grand prix it was not.

More Power for VAG Cars Courtesy of ABT

Contrary to popular belief, ABT can do more than just make your VW, Audi, SEAT, or Skoda look better. They offer a range of power upgrades as well, with their latest being an ECU (Engine Control Unit) upgrade to boost power and performance on 1.2 and 1.4 liter TSi turbocharged lumps.
The award winning engine is a great platform to work from thanks to its class and industry leading qualities, which include good fuel economy, an excellent power to weight ratio, and low carbon emissions. The basic ABT philosophy is to enhance the power output so that it equals that of the next size engine in its class. For example, a 1.2 liter TSi develops 105 HP (77 kW). After fitting it with the ECU, output is upped to 140 HP (103 kW), which is equal to that of the factory 1.4 liter unit. This equates to a gain of around 15% which will surely be felt when driving in both day-to-day scenarios as well as when you?re in a hurry.
The same treatment is available for the 1.4 liter TSi ? power is increased from 180 HP (132 kW) to 210 HP (154 kW), which brings it on par with the Golf GTI. With less weight and more power, one can safely conclude that the likes of the Polo GTI or the Ibiza Cupra with the ABT enhancement will show up the benchmark Golf GTI in the performance stakes.
ABT claim the fuel economy remains unchanged even with more power ? no doubt a useful feature with apparently no downsides. There are a host of other tuners who offer similar products with much higher gains, but the ABT guys ?play it safe? to maintain fuel economy and reliability.

McLaren’s first supercar, the MP4-12C, is all set and ready to go, so McLaren has moved on to a couple of other projects that will surely excite all of the racing fans out there. Apparently, McLaren is prepping two different racing versions of the MP4-12C: a GT2 and a GT3. The official debut will take place in 2012 with only 15 units of the GT3 scheduled for production. The GT2 will see an even smaller run make it to the production line, but no concrete number has been given.
In order to build the GT3 and GT2-specs racecars, McLaren teamed up CRS Racing, a British firm that has seen their fair share of race victories. The duo have already begun working on the GT3s at the McLaren Technology Center near London with the racecar transformation scheduled to take place at CRS’s workshops near the Donington Park circuit.
Plan on seeing the GT3 version compete in the 2012 race season while the GT2-spec car should be set to go in time for the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2013.

Virgin Racing?s Korean Grand Prix ended in frustration as both cars fail to finish the race, but this time it wasn?t entirely their fault.

Canadian GP: Vettel fastest in second practice as tyre degrade
June 11 '10
Sebastian Vettel topped the time sheets for Red Bull at the second practice session for the Canadian Grand Prix.
Fernando Alonso set the second fastest time for Ferrari after managing only 7th in the morning session. His team mate Felipe Massa finished a strong fifth after setting 12th fastest time in the first practice session.
Mercedes showed superb pace as Nico Rosberg set the third fastest time, while Michael Schumacher was second in the morning session.
Some drivers improved their lap times on the super-soft tyres, but had trouble making the super-soft tyres last. Most of the drivers struggled with the super-soft tyres, which seemed to grain a lot faster. Comments on F1Fanatic suggest that the option tyres were graining too badly.
[f1fanatic_co_uk:]
Just under five minutes to go. Slow-mo shows lots of graining on Vettel's front-left tyre. #F1
[Comment From ADELAIDE F1ADELAIDE F1: ]
Excellent slow-mo on Webber's car shows massive graining... bits even flying off in chunks.
[Comment From PeterPeter: ]
look at ham he has massive graining and is about 10sec per lap slower for the last couple of laps...
[@adamcooperf1:]
Hamilton on team radio about his option tyre graining: "I'm about to crash this car!"
The tyres available for the weekend are medium (prime) and super-soft (option). Because of serious tyre graining, qualifying and race could be bit more interesting, with the top ten qualifiers having to start the race with the same set of tyres which they qualified on.
McLaren reserve driver Gary Paffet observed, ?With all the tyre graining issues people are having, we might see our first two-stop race of the season on Sunday.?
Once again Heikki Kovalainen in the Lotus was the fastest of the new team drivers in 19th and Hispania?s Karun Chandhok continued his impressive run to finish 20th, ahead of his team mate Bruno Senna and the Virgins of Timo Glock and Lucas di Grassi. Jarno Trulli could only manage to complete 11 laps due to electrical problems on his Lotus.

Is Vettel F1's new villain?
|
?In terms of sheer ability Vettel ranks with Hamilton and Fernando Alonso as the best of the current generation but he is currently being outperformed by the more mature man in the other Red Bull. Until the 23-year-old learns to focus his gifts at all times the brilliant will continue to be mixed with the best forgotten and he will have to wait to become Formula One's second German world champion.?Tom Cary of The Daily Telegraph warned against punishing drivers too harshly for attempting to overtake. But he agreed that Vettel appeared to be crumbling under the pressure of not living up to expectations.
?My view is still that he is a hugely talented driver with a lot of potential. He was unlucky earlier in the season when technical glitches cost him. He obviously has one-lap pace. He can control a race from start to finish when everything clicks. But at the moment it appears he is losing the psychological battle to his team mate (who is visibly growing in confidence and authority) and the pressure is getting to him.?

What it's like being an F1 presenter and producer
Hi guys,
I hope you enjoyed this weekend's show. I'm writing this blog entry in the production office at 1am on Monday in Singapore (about three hours after the grand prix finished).
We stay on European time for the Singapore GP which means out of bed at 1pm, and into bed at 4am, which is strange but seems to work for the media and the teams.
Anyway, to this week's blog.
I remember as a TV-obsessed kid wondering what happened when the presenters weren't on screen, so I decided to show you!
I know lots of you are keen to get as close to F1 and the BBC's coverage as possible, which is why I love doing the blogs and the tweets. But this weekend I've decided to up the ante.
I asked the director Richard if it was possible to record the talkback and the three camera feeds along with our actual output.
The result is embedded below. It is about as close as you'll get to being an F1 presenter without actually doing it.
You can hear exactly what I hear as the show gets going. You'll also spot the transmission on the bottom right as well as the three cameras we use.
Now, the start of the show is notoriously much easier than the end.
For the race build-up, we know pretty much what we're going to do and who we'll speak to. By contrast, after the programme we generally have 30-50 minutes to fill without any script or running order.
I'd love to know what you make of the video. You can hear last minute changes of shot, the plan unfolding inside the McLaren garage and how we make late, swift decisions to try to make the show as dynamic, exciting and entertaining as possible.
I should point out, by the way, that as the video was filmed within the confines of the Singapore track, it is only available to UK users.
Anyway, enough words, watch the video and let me know what you think!
Jake
