BMW Z3M ? A/C Schnitzer inspired

 Gents,

I have pondering been on this kit in my little stack here in Algeria. Tamiya has managed as usual to replicate in fine details the 1:1 lines of the original BMW Z3.

However, this is the basic 1.9L engine, with very little options on it. Entry-level German cars are usually deprived eye-catching interesting features. I find it too plain for a build, especially with wheels that seemed designed to fit a forkift?

This is why I thought of the more powerful and sexy M version, with some inspiration of the mighty AC Schnitzer V8 roadster. The equation is simple: take the base version, shove a V8, widen the wheel tracks, and add some fine accessories here and there. And this is what I intend to do with this little kit.

I would have considered the challenge of opening the hood, but I do not have access to the right material in this part of the world.

I?ll take this opportunity to share with you a tutorial I found on Scalewiki regarding widening wheel arches.

To start with, you?ll need to glue some pieces of styrene all throughout; two layers were need of if I recall correctly, 1.5mm thick styrene:

Next step, start filling and adding two-part epoxy putty in order to cover the bits of styrene and follow the body contours. Note that you will need to trim / cut the excess styrene prior to this step to minimize sanding time:

After putty has rested over night, hours of sanding were required to smooth out the new body extensions (believe me when I say hours? and I still have a long way to go?).

This is how the car looks like from the rear end. I also filled the license plate area to make a more prominent bumper, while creating an additional opening to have at the end dual exhausts:

Next step is to continue with sanding until the wheel arches are smooth and conform to the body lines; some basic putty will be required to insure smooth surfaces.
